Mary Stuart
Fans and Shadows
Tresart Gallery, in collaboration with Galeria de Arte Mexicano, will be exhibiting visceral found object sculptures and abstract paintings by Mary Stuart, an American living and working in Mexico. The artist will be attending the event.
Inspired by practicing deep meditation, the work is an accumulation of objects gathered and put together over a year’s time with a combination of joy and serendipity. A fallen branch from a palm tree, small golden charms of Buda, pearls, charred pieces of sandalwood fans and a baby starfish all come together to be transformed in her studio. Mary empowers the objects she personally discovers and changes them into unparalleled works of art.
The Galeria de Arte Mexicano has been the most prestigious gallery in Mexico for the past seventy-three years. Led by Director Ines Amor during its initial forty years, the gallery earned its reputation by exhibiting not only most of the artists that would break ground in Mexican Art, and place it in the international map, but also those significant artists who left their indelible imprint in Mexico.

Humberto Castro, The Journey, 2008, Oil on Canvas, 42 x 55 ½ in |
|
October 3rd – October 31st
Contemporary Fables. Humberto Castro
Castro, a member of the renowned 1980s generation of Cuban artists, whose previous works often referred to flight, cages and voyages over water, has expanded his visual metaphors to the concept of fables and historic immigration as the foundation for contemporary society. The artist’s new paintings transpose the fable—a literary term for a brief story about talking animals, plants or other objects offering a moral lesson—into paintings.
According to Castro, “the fables are already there in the paintings themselves, but their interpretation and the moral to be drawn from each will be different by viewers who bring their own experiences and responses to the work. Cuba continues to be unconsciously reflected in my work…”
A painting by Castro, Oasis, 2007 oil on canvas, will be the cover of a book scheduled to be published this fall. Cuba Per Se consists of interviews with 40 Cuban writers in exile conducted by author Armando Chávez Rivera.

October 3rd – October 31st
ARTEFACTORIA
Javier Valle-Pérez
ARTEFACTORIA is the name of the new exhibition presented at The Americas Collection in Coral Gables by Nicaraguan artist Javier Valle-Pérez.
This intrinsic body of work has the deliberate intention to comment on our fascination, as a society, with objects, which in turn tends to generate the impulsive need to surround ourselves with “artifacts” as if our lives depended on it. This human obsession with collecting, accumulating, mustering and amassing objects that are deemed indispensable ultimately become the invisible pollutants that contaminate our spaces, choke our vision and infect our world.
Objects as Art is the focus of this exhibition, showcasing the artist’s use of conventional items as the subject of beauty. The viewer is presented with an array of whimsical citadels of colorful yet indescribable shapes as a way to perhaps escape the inescapable, which only the imagination can transform.

Tomás Sánchez, Laguna, tempera on heavy paper, 1992. 22 x 30 in |
|
Five Contemporary Latin American Artists
Tómas Sánchez, Jaime Carrasquilla, Fidel Mico, Ivan Loboguerrero y Renato Meziat
Tomas Sanchez brings us one of his serene landscapes in Laguna. This work is part of Sanchez' use of landscapes to express his feelings about man and culture in its natural environment.
Jaime Carrasquilla's work reflects how he was influenced by the surroundings of the city port of Cartagena, Colombia. This is perfectly represented in Coral.
Loboguerrero features two beautiful paintings in this exhibit, his unique style where he features a human being wrapped around his art. A good example is Estancia Mágica.
Fidel Mico's Sendero combines natural scenery with subtle shadows to create a different type of landscape.
Meziat established his own unique vision of Realism, in which a common object becomes a sophisticated, modern statement while retaining a classic sense of style. The nude and the vases typifies his style.
