Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, the Condé Nast Years, 1923-1937
The exhibition features the finest examples of Steichen’s celebrity and fashion portraiture made for Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines between 1923-1937 and marks the first time in Florida that such an extensive array of Steichen’s work has been exhibited.
Steichen, who served as chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair during the 1920s and ‘30s, is said to have revolutionized fashion photography with his crisp, detailed, high-key style, and changed public perceptions of the American woman. His influence is felt in the field to this day.
Steichen’s portraits of icons such as Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Amelia Earhart, Ginger Rogers, Loretta Young, Martha Graham, Dorothy Parker, and many others will be on display.
Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Museum, said: “In conjunction with In High Fashion, the Museum has selected works from its extensive photography collection to illustrate images of people (from business people to circus performers) in their daily line of work, wearing their working clothes. We have, with tongue in cheek, called the exhibition It’s Not About Fashion!”

Until April 11 The Fantastic World Of José Gurvich
José Gurvich was an extraordinary artist whose life bridged distant places and cultures. When he was six years old his family emigrated to Uruguay. His pictorial language developed from the diverse environments and art forms he was exposed to: intimate domestic scenes in Montevideo, rural life and religious festivities in Israel, New York's crowds and vibrant urban views. Each element in his paintings is carefully chosen from lived experience and condensed by his constant search for the fundamental and essential.
Until April 25 Women's Work / Men’s Work: Labor and Gender in America Women’s Work / Men’s Work: Labor and Gender in America, an exhibition that explores how the sexual division of labor in America has been represented in art, propaganda, and advertising. This exhibition inaugurates the Frost Museum’s collaboration with The Wolfsonian in creating an on-campus teaching gallery, in which The Wolfsonian’s collection can be presented at a site that is near the geographic center of FIU’s academic community.
Until May 16 In Body and Soul: The Performance Art of María Teresa Hincapié This exhibition, curated by Francine Birbragher, examines the work of well-known Colombian performance artist María Teresa Hincapié. Hincapié’s initial studies were in acting and she developed her work in performance art, where she stood in the vanguard of this artistic medium in Colombia.

Third Thursday - Brickell Gallery Night Permanent Exhibit
Manuel Carbonell. Modern Master Sculptor An important collection of maquettes, sculptures, bas-reliefs and monumental sculptures by Cuban Master Sculptor Manuel Carbonell. His commissioned work as the creator of two of Miami’s most important landmarks, “The Tequesta Family” at the Brickell Avenue Bridge and “El Centinela del Rio” at the entrance of the Miami River in Brickell Key, denotes his more classical and figurative style. The works exhibited at the Gallery are modern, where Carbonell searches for the essence of the form and the absence of detail while giving a sense of monumentality to his work.
We invite you to visit our gallery to see an important collection of the works of Carbonell ranging from maquettes to monumentals and the paintings and sculptures of Mauro Arbiza.

Miguel Padura, Breve Historia del Tiempo, 2009
Oil on Canvas, 57 x 62 in.
Miguel Padura. Recent Works
“Padura is one of the most interesting and innovative younger realist now working in the United States. Unlike many representational painters active in this country whose points of reference are often specifically North American, the look and feel of the frequently enigmatic compositions of Padura encompass allusions to several traditions. He is an artist who is aware of and assimilates the past in a unique way. In some instances he makes the viewer immediately aware of his sources and his points of inspiration. At other moments the beholder of his canvases can become entangled in a web of mysterious allusions that he has seemingly created out of richness of his own fantasy..”Edward J. Sullivan.
“What interests me, as critic of my own geographical latitude, is that in Padura’s paintings I detect a spiritual climate given by luminous and atmospheric equivalents which reveal a personality shaped in that notable geographic and human medium that is the Caribbean. A realist within the most demanding of the traditions, Miguel Padura has with his forcefulness and sensorial richness and important place among our artists of the Spanish-speaking world.
