George Rodez, Guajiro Up a Tree, 2008, Acrylic on Canvas, 48 x 24 in.
|
|
May 1st – 31st
George Rodez. Caribe (ka-re-be).
Caribbean works: a search of his culture and roots.
Cuba’s past comes alive in Caribe. Rodez’s images come to life with bold, vivid colors like that of the stained glass windows of old Cuban architecture. He uses subjects and images that would normally be used in folkloric Cuban paintings and gives them a modern pop-ish twist. Rodez claims that what he accomplishes in creating this body of work is a sense of voyaging back to Cuba, transforming it, and making it fresh and new, as if never touched by 51 years of stagnation. The works act as a defibrillator bringing back to life the Cuba, Before Castro, and foretelling of the possibilities of a new beginning for the lost island of ruins.
Although born in Manhattan, New York, he has found a connection with his heritage and culture as a way of fusing a lifestyle that he never knew with the modern day existence of the Cuban-American experience in Miami. He describes this work as a mixture of the old with the new, the Cuban and the American, the Caribbean and the African, all rolled up into one delicious palette of colors. |

Stults. Glass
Kathy Stults has been working with glass since 1997. She starting playing with glass and was hooked on the beauty of the medium. Kathy enjoys the hot shop, blowing and sculpting a variety of shapes and sizes of vessels. She is excited by the endless experiments with color combinations and learning new techniques. Some challenges have been from others to fit a need.
Recently for the St Stephen's School renovation, Kathy made a series of cast glass tiles of sea creatures for the kid’s bathroom. Before that, Riviera Presbyterian Church in South Miami was undergoing major renovations. Kathy made two 9-foot tall, sand blasted panels for the front of the sanctuary and a 10-foot glass cross, lit from behind and spectacular. All of her pieces are unique, made for a special person, place, or occasion! |

Reflections of my Daily Life
"My artwork is a direct result of my everyday life. All that takes place around me serves as a constant inspiration. Those events that touch me have the power to seep deep into my soul, which are then transferred into my canvases. When I need to get inspired, I just have to take long strolls around my beautiful Buenos Aires. It is there that my visual stories come alive.
I do not work form sketches. I rather tap into those residual memories captured during my exchange with my surroundings. I also compose my stories using both humor and irony. My characters are all floating with total lack of perspective. In other words, they live in a very organized disorganization.
My childhood memories are constantly present in my work. They have found a way of sneaking into my canvases to become the focus of my attention. For instance, I could suddenly find myself in first grade wearing my school uniform and surrounded by my classmates; or I could be jumping over the roofs of cars hoping to find my dad so he can carry me of his shoulders”. Wulf Barsch, Arless Day, Josephine Haden, Kyle, Richard Lytle, John Torina Fantasy, Environmental Assaults, Impressionism
Included in ‘Vistas: Landscapes Interpreted’ Show
Fantasy landscapes, environmental assaults and a contemporary American impressionist are among the varying approaches featured in “Vistas: Landscapes Interpreted”.
According to Josephine Haden, the odd juxtapositions of unrelated elements in the her landscapes are “less fantasy than a personal collection of images.” Awarded the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts 2008-09 Fellowship, Haden’s paintings “stand on the threshold of entropy, a place where disorder is neither threatening nor disarming, but instead, a thing of beauty,” according to the renowned author and critic Donald Kuspit, who authored several essays in catalogs of the work. Other works include assemblage and installations by Kyle, a Florida artist whose works reflect his concern for the ongoing loss of the state’s natural areas to urban development; Arless Day, whose collages create a place in time, just as a movie director builds a set; “cosmic imagery” of Wulf Barsch, combining Egyptian and Islamic references with geometrical and astrological elements; Richard Lytle, whose work was included in New York’s Museum of Modern Art exhibition Sixteen Americans in 1959; and the American Impressionist, John Torina, one of the last practitioners of the almost-forgotten art of plein air painting. |

About Concrete Abstract Art
“It is not uninteresting to see how the luxuriant nature of the American continent, its intense baroque style and its magical realism have engendered a movement as rigorous as that of concrete abstract art. The asceticism of this artistic tendency seems to contradict the eloquence characteristic of everything American which manifested itself since the florid times of the chroniclers, passing through modernism until the present day. Nevertheless, that is how it has been. In Uruguay and Argentina, where the “Madí” movement was born; in Venezuela, where cybernetics and optical art came into their own; in Brazil, mother country of concrete poetry; or in Colombia, where the abstraction represented by Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar and Fanny Sanín, among others, has flourished….” Carlos Luis

Fidel Mico, Paisaje X, 2009,

|
Fidel Mico and Ivan Loboguerrero.
Recent Works
Fidel Mico was born in Havana, Cuba in 1967. He graduated from the San Alejandro Academy. One of the main themes of his artwork is landscapes in which he combines a wide array of colors which gives his paintings movement in each stroke. A good example of this is "Paisaje VII". The beauty of this work frames itself in a realism which delights and involves the viewer with each steps of his strokes. This creates an impressive colorfulness that transports the mind to unknown latitudes inside this tropical landscape.
Ivan Loboguerrero was born in Bogotá. His art blends clean colors with shining strokes that creates peaceful atmospheres. Loboguerrero's work is rich in oil quantity and though elaborated textures, visual sensations are generated. With this horizon, the artist offers us his first diptych; we understand what goes into his mind and color symphonies. A good example is "Estancia Mágica". |
