Connie Lloveras
Constructions, Canvas, and Paper Works |
By juxtaposing lines and forms of unrecognizable yet familiar shapes, Connie Lloveras’ work entices the viewer to explore with her their own associations to the visual shapes. By stripping these elements of any direct literal reference the artist invite us to use our imagination to create their own symbolism in reference to the forms presented.
Lloveras’ most recent works consist of constructions made of clay, wood, paint and rocks. She is also presenting a number of works on paper and canvas that explore the same ideas as the constructions do.This newest work draws inspiration from visual imagery and forms that permeate our surroundings.
Connie Lloveras work often uses elements in ways that contrast the earthly with the divine, and depict the human struggle to understand the universe and his/her own place in its vastness.

The Vanguardia Artists
Selections from Important Cuban Artworks,
Volume Six (2008) |
The exhibition will highlight a rich showcase by Cuban Vanguardia artists featured in our annual signature catalog Important Cuban Artworks, Volume Six.
Included are works by major artists such as Eduardo Abela, Cundo Bermúdez, Mario Carreño, Roberto Diago, Carlos Enríquez, Víctor Manuel García, Wifredo Lam, Luis Martínez Pedro, José Mijares, Amelia Peláez, Fidelio Ponce, René Portocarrero, Mariano Rodríguez, and others.
“The strong and cohesive artistic avant-garde that emerged in Havana in the twenties was seminal in the evolution of the modern Cuban identity. Born around the turn of the century, the vanguardia painters shared the heady sense of confidence and nationalism that characterized progressive Cuban intellectuals of the time.” Professor Juan Martínez, Florida International University. Cuban Art & National Identity, The Vanguardia Painters 1927-1950. |

Miranda, El Baño, Oil on Canvas; 2006, 59 x 43 in. |
|
| Belarmino Miranda. Recent Works |
During the latter part of the 1990s two figurative currents were beginning to emerge in the world of art. The first was Hyperrealism (under the umbrella of a strong development of the visual arts and motion pictures) and neorealism which had been declared extinct by many critics. These two currents are subtlely present in the works of Colombian painter Beelarmino Miranda. A native of Medellin, Miranda's work focuses on feminine nudes as they mix with simple contemporary landscapes.
Miranda's works were featured in the Bogota's prestigious art fair "Artbog". The works sold quite well and heavily impressed those in attendance. In these paintings Miranda offers us a glimpse of the poetics of a memory of origins as he mixes elements as simple as the encounter of the woman's skin with the purity of water.

Under the Radar: Nine Chinese Artists Interpret the Figure
Liang Haopeng, Li Jia, Cui Jin, Wang Limin, Liu Qi Ming, Zhu Yan, Liao Yibai, Liao Zhenwu and He Zubin. |
This exhibition is the second contemporary Chinese show by the downtown Coral Gables gallery in recent months. “Each of the artists in this show has a very different style and unique subject matter,” Miller says. “Several are subtly critical of their government. It’s a fascinating look into their world.”
Senior artist in the group, in terms of exhibitions, is Lu Qi Ming, whose oils depict a barely clad figure dangling above the sea on a single rope. According to the artist, “The politics of our society keep us dangling above a mysterious future, leaving us all at the mercy of the hands that hold our strings.”
The most spectacular work in the show is a triptych by Liao Zhenwu stretching across 27 feet. Its three panels are a stylized, painterly depiction of the motorcyclists in the artist’s gray, gritty hometown in Sichuan. Zhenwu’s other paintings, also rendered in shades of gray, white and black, either show other motorcyclists or are one of his series inspired by the mannikins in Beijing’s showroom windows. |

John Amat has set his intuitive eye on the art of his native island of Cuba. The self-taught artist and entrepreneur has tapped into the bountiful island and discovered talented artists creating extraordinary landscapes and windows into the timeless milieu of the island.
The art gallery represents Cuban artists that show an array of styles ranging from hyperrealism to surrealism, as well as a diverse content area without the trappings of political, social or economic undertones. When you step inside the gallery, the breathtaking lush mountain landscapes and fauna with cavernous watering holes: or the still life consisting of the exotic native fruits wrapped by the sensuous oblique lighting: in a hidden corner, will take you far away, yet only miles away.
