Some Are Divas...
by MANO and George Rodez
Some Are Divas… a celebration about women. The exhibition features a selection of paintings and drawings by MANO and George Rodez converging on the power and beauty of woman. These are modern day women of our time and for our times. Although most of the portrayals are of unknown personalities a few are of iconic in nature. The exhibition is representative of types of women that we recognize and know, not because of individual fame but because of their impact on our lives. And yes, some are DIVAS.

Presents
East Village Gallery
Leonardo Hidalgo in recent years has gained an abundant amount of notoriety across the globe. His latest collection is painting the town red among many other vibrant colors.
The Ecuadorian-born latest inspiration is recollecting his past, his childhood years, which he claims now gives him the ability to see life today through child-like eyes. Today, his paintings are a true reflection of that vision. He uses bright colors, and the result is a high energy series that can help you get back in touch with your youth “and I want everyone to feel like I do, like they can be in touch with their inner child again.” He says he wants people to feel just as alive and just as passionate about life as he does; he wants people who look at his artwork to feel that same fervor.
Also on exhibit in the main gallery is the internationally renowned Jamali and Shie Moreno’s artwork of individual expression

Miguel Ponticu. Trees Of Steel
Spanish sculptor and painter Miguel Ponticu bring us eight of his Trees of Steel. They are done in bronze and stainless steel, as the artist is sending a clear ecological message with his work. Ponticu says that "his work is a compromise with our ecosystem" and hopes that through this exhibit the public will gain awareness about the importance of the conservation of natural resources.
The trees have had quite a journey since they were first sculpted. They have been shown is his native Spain, in several museums, and recently the trees made it across the ocean and have graced the halls of the prestigious gallery in New York City. Now they are ready to be shown for the second time here in Coral Gables.
Jorge M. Sori Fine Art specializes in works of contemporary artist and masters of Latin American Art and European art. The gallery has been established since 1991.

Paternosto |

César Paternosto
Painting and Sculpture 1970 – 2008
Born in Argentina in 1931, César Paternosto has exhibited widely in Latin America and abroad. Since he began working as an artist in the early 1960s, Paternosto has been in the vanguard of abstraction in Latin America. An expert on the symbolic systems of Pre-Columbian civilizations, Paternosto has used his own photography and drawings to document and analyze the ancient remains of the region. Paternosto's exploration of Amerindian abstraction has fueled his artistic work of the last twenty years.
"[...] Ever since the early 1930s, when Alexander Calder visited Piet Mondrian's studio and had that marvelous vision of imagining his neat rectangles as if they were flying through space, nobody had achieved a similar effect to the one conceived and executed by Paternosto with his pictures painted on the sides of the canvas, with the resulting effect described earlier, of glowing weightlessness."
Francisco Calvo Serraller, The Edge of Light, in César Paternosto, exhibition catalogue; Segovia: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente, 2004.

Matt Carone, Circus Dream, acrylic on paper, 2008, 11 x 9 in |
|
Until April 30
Matt Carone. Autocycles
Although the artist’s longtime concern with figurative abstraction has shifted toward more patterned subject matter in the new, subtly toned works, the influence of Chilean master Roberto Matta—a friend of Carone’s for 45 years—still shows.
Like the abstract expressionists, Carone seeks a spontaneous image as a consequence of a gesture...dictated more by the subconscious than by a rational, disciplined procedure.
These paintings seem to be an opening of a new door of automatism, Carone notes, adding: Their seed was planted by Matta.
Carone became interested in art as an adolescent during the summer of 1944, when he was asked to model for Hans Hoffman. His older brother, the well-known painter Nicolas Carone, was studying with Hoffman. Through his brother and years of involvement in art, Carone has had a close association with many of the era’s most famous artists and critics, including Conrad Marca-Relli, James
Brooks, Paul Jenkins, Sandro Chia, Larry Rivers, Balcolm Greene, James Rosenquist, Duane Hanson, Thomas Hoving, Clement Greenberg and many others. |

Triptych
The Narrative Art of Historical Japan
The traditional Japanese woodblock print is an amazing, labor intensive art form in itself. Even more remarkable is the assembling of three individual prints that further enhance the artist’s voice to relate the heroic events, legends and celebrated aesthetics of his day.
In the creation of the triptych the artist must render each panel to be a complete image unto itself that when linked with its companions tells the larger story. It is precisely this ingenious capability that has caused the majority of the triptychs that have survived over time to be separated and framed in households as individual works of art.
Shirley and Gilbert Luber were passionate collectors of the Japanese woodblock print for over 30 years. Every year they spent one month in Japan searching and procuring outstanding works for their collection. The Luber Collection of Antique Triptychs is a rare opportunity to view this extraordinary art form through the experienced eye of one of the world’s most discerning collectors. |

Permanent Exhibit of the Works of Carbonell and Mauro Arbiza Fernández
An important collection of maquettes, sculptures, bas-reliefs and monumental sculptures by Cuban Master Sculptor Manuel Carbonell. His commissioned work as the creator of two of Miami’s most important landmarks, “The Tequesta Family” at the Brickell Avenue Bridge and “El Centinela del Rio” at the entrance of the Miami River in Brickell Key, denotes his more classical and figurative style. The works exhibited at the Gallery are modern, where Carbonell searches for the essence of the form and the absence of detail while giving a sense of monumentality to his work. Three monumental 8-foot Carbonell sculptures are on exhibit at Art Midtown on Midtown Blvd. and NW 34th Street in cooperation with Daniel Azoulay Gallery.
Carbonell: “Maquettes to Monumentals” remains on permanent exhibit at Beaux Arts Gallery together with the paintings and sculptures of Carbonell disciple Mauro Arbiza |

Othon Castañeda presents his most recent work consisting of paintings and installed assemblages. Through his minimalist, albeit voluptuous paintings, Castañeda repeats fragments himself in the fragment, reiterating himself in the repetition of a pattern that through the process of stylization culminates in a volumetric, abstract, alien-to-the body image: rare.
