Jan. 10 – Feb. 8
Creatures
Natasha Duwin – Installations in the project room
Natalia Reparaz – Large scale mixd media painting
Ray Paul – expanded painting
Artformz’ January show brings together three artists whose work explore ideas and personal viewpoints on critters, creatures, amoeba and the mystery of life that surrounds us everyday in our dreams, under our skin, or along the forest path.
Duwin’s earthy and ethereal “nest objects” have come to life in her installation “The Rest is Silence”. Reparaz presents a monumental, two dimensional piece based on her theme of surreal giant squid that continue to commune with the human race in extraordinary ways. Paul’s abstract, action paintings at once echo rock music, and then suddenly the quite of an under water world of currents and eddies, teaming with any sort of microscopic organisms.

Francis Acea & Tracey Snelling
Ana Maria Pacheco. Project room
Francis Acea Acea is testing the notion of invented value versus accumulated value. His work is filled with irony, as he is practically challenging the spectators, but at the same time appealing at their sense of humor.
Tracey Snelling works with elements mainly from the advertising industry and the cinema. Many of her pieces are inspired by movies, especially from the fifties. She also takes elements from the architecture; bringing it to her pieces as photos or as scale models. m is best known for her life-like sculptures based on religious figures. We’ll be presenting her work ‘Dark Night of the Soul’, a sculptural installation, based on the life of St. Sebastian; the work expresses her reaction to the military dictatorship in Brazil during the 1960’s and 70’s
Ana Maria Pacheco (b.1943, Goiánia, Brazil- lives in London, England). Best known for her life-like sculptures based on religious figures, Ana Maria is also an accomplished printmaker. The exhibition includes works on canvas and on paper, as well as a mural.
“The diverse ways in which a certain cultural emanation is developed by different persons or communities (for example, the constructive utopias in Brazil, Europe and Argentina).
The process by which a specific formal answer, is emptied from the ideological contents that originated it and used for diverse and even opposite purposes (the influence of Bauhaus in the industrial mass production).
The transformation experienced by a style when transplanted to another physical and social reality (the Vitruvian model in religious architecture in the Spanish colonies of America).
These enunciations are a few examples of what has always fascinated me, both sensual and intellectually: the impure condition of culture and the visual expressions of that complexity.
In a young country as mine this is an everyday and constitutive condition. Buenos Aires and its architecture are proof of it.
I intend to register all this in my work.
If I have to synthesize in two words the themes that inspire it these would be sickness and contamination.” Pablo Siquier |

Stratum. Eight progressive artists
Shie Moreno, Leonardo Hidalgo, Alex Brewer, Alex Yanes, Rachel Mouial, Natalia Yovane, Richard Hambleton and Todji Kurtzman
Lawrence Savage is expanding his art presence from the magnificent home base in his Coral Gables location ( 4217 Ponce de Leon Blvd.) to open East Village Gallery, art from the street, in the Wynwood Art District. Stratum is a group exhibit highlighting the importance of artistic expression as a means to generate social awareness.
The work showcased in Stratum celebrates artists’ who share an inherent need to create imagery captivating social life and personal exploration. Stratum has united seven progressive artists from the east coast metropolitan hubs including Miami, Atlanta, New York City, and St. Martin island. Stratum includes paintings from the six emerging artists and the unveiling of Todji Kurtzman’s 12 foot sculpture weighing over 2,000 pounds. Each of these artists’ work embodies internally consistent characteristics that are distinguishable from their peers.
The newest artist to join our Wynwood Gallery is Alex Yanes. "My generation was raised on cartoons, graffiti and tattoos; it's what we consider fine art." Using vivid colors, Yanes uses bold outlines to define his intricate figures.
East Village Gallery is the ideal venue to host this exhibit; offering over 2000 square feet of open space, extremely high vaulted ceilings, and an outdoor garden fit for 100’s of purveyors to enjoy.

Migration. Joe Concra and Kevin Paulsen
Migration, rich surfaces of contrasting themes and styles by Joe Concra and Kevin Paulsen; also featured are Robert Swedroe and Mike Tesch.
Concra’s work on the other hand exudes a melancholic undertone portrayed in his paintings by the dark hues and the ineffable sadness of his subjects. His painting seem to emerge from a world not known, one that is more fantastical. His wprk is engaging and playful yet conveys an underlying depth and reflection.
Paulsen’s still life paintings and landscapes evoke a concept of nature that appears to be from a different era; simple shapes of color become symbols of aliveness and possibility. His painting depict lush, paradisiacal trees and semi-mythical creatures, sweeping the viewer into a semi-tropical realm that evokes a sense of myth and connection to history.
Kelley Roy Gallery hosts a show featuring the compelling, spirited three dimensional assemblages of Miami artist and architect Robert M. Swedroe. The exhibition consists of the artist’s vividly colored collages, ranging from the whimsical to the dark, and including an imposing eight feet by ten feet floor installation.
Mike Tesch's work is alive, bursting with color, makes a statement, is stimulating and humorous. Tesch believes art should contain a point of view that reveals something about the artist and opens a window for a new kind of comprehension by its viewers. Tesch is a soft spoken man with a bold stroke of the brush and a sharp wit that resonates not only in his paintings but throughout his powerful quote collection entitled,"Quotes". He professes to the theory--When in doubt, risk it. |

Manuela Ribadeneira and Pablo Cardoso ponder about universal geopolitics from different angles and esthetic resources. Manuela Ribadeneira delves on the interference, conquest of territories via objects, audio/videos and photographic means, making historic facts contemporary.
Pablo Cardoso, on the other hand, keeps an apparently passive position when he presents aerial views of untouched territories or hardly intervened by men, in what he calls a literary brush.

Linda Copeland
Artist in Residence
Copeland’s art is all about expressing energy. Her paintings lack familiar objects and as a result she invites the viewer to feel the painting emotionally. Rather than trying to interpret the painting, she would like you to simply enjoy the experience, feel the energy and see the beauty. Her process is very physical and it is this form of both bodily and emotional intensity that inspires her. She believes that in our daily life we personally interpret what we see to define the experience we have. Each of us can look at the same object and see something different based on our level of consciousness.
All the art you will view in her gallery studio has the impression of spontaneity. In the first room, you’ll find paintings that use an “all over” technique – there is no definable composition. In the other room is a brand new series called Moondust. |

Mika Tajima . deal or Not Deal
Deal or No Deal examines a field of transactions and negotiations, employing elements of geometric formalism to delineate various positions of inclusion and exclusion, participation and observation, and the particular and universal. The circle, line, and square in its proliferation enter into a loaded visual order. In this exhibition of sculpture and print arrangements, intersecting circles, shaded areas, and parallel stripes form abstract Venn diagrams illustrating uncontainable combinations of relationships and differences (insiders and outsiders).

Jesus Soto.
Penetrable BBL Blue, 1999
Enjoy this spectacular Soto at Durban Segnini new open space in Wynwood. Soto was a Venezuelan artist (1923 – 2005). He was a sculptor and painter and is most famous for his op art and kinetic art works. Soto is particularly well known for his penetrables, interactive sculptures which consist of square arrays of thin, dangling tubes through which observers can walk. It has been said of Soto's art that it is inseparable from the viewer; it can only stand completed in the illusion perceived by the mind as a result of observing the piece.
Durban-Segnini Gallery was founded in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1970 and in Miami, USA in 1992, by its present director and owner Mr. Cesar Segnini.
Durban-Segnini Gallery specializes in contemporary painting and sculpture, emphasizing in artists who have worked with abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction and kinetic art.Simultaneously, the Gallery strives to promote and diffuse new artistic values as well as the historical vanguards that have influenced those.

The Spectacular work of KRK Ryden
KRK Ryden's art is a record of mongrel pop culture. His aesthetic is informed by comic books, punk rock, and cartoons, while his world view is strictly DEVO. KRK's work embraces everyday absurdity and a cartoony view of reality. His paintings are colorful and visually appealing reflections on discarded icons, and his graphics are well-realized snapshots of cartoon life. For over thirty years, KRK has been creating illustrations and paintings for underground bands, publishers, and institutions.

Purvis Young
Artist in residence
Internationally acclaimed Southern African American Vernacular artist Purvis Young creates his canvases from recycled products including found wood, discarded library books, old political posters, used furniture and various surplus items from construction sites. His complex language expresses what he sees and experiences in the world around him in all its unpretentious stark reality. His symbols convey the on-going economic and cultural divides so prevalent in Miami and beyond through recurring images of black and white horses, pregnant women, highways and overpasses, convoys of trucks and trains, railroad tracks, airplanes, angels and Zulu warriors (whom he considers his tribe).
Today, Young's work is in more than 60 public collections and numerous private ones. His work hangs in The Bass Museum of Art (Miami); American Folk Art Museum (New York); The Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.); Lowe Art Museum (University of Miami); Museum of Fine Arts (Houston); Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Smithsonian American Art Museum among many others.
