BKF Katherine Mann, Chord 1, Acrylic and stretched paper over canvas, 28 x 18 in

From June 11 to July 4
Katherine Mann. Madrigal

Mann’s kinetic mixed-media paintings depict ever-changing fantasy worlds where blood cells, rainforests and coral reefs collide. Each composition features dramatic landscapes alive with minute details, patterns and interlocking forms.

10% of the proceeds from sales at the reception will benefit the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.

Each composition in Madrigal features dramatic landscapes alive with minute details, patterns and interlocking forms.  Mann, who lives and works in Baltimore, earned an M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art’s Hoffberger School of Painting and has exhibited her work throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Taiwan. She draws on her background as an illustrator and graphic designer to create detailed, high-energy compositions.

Katherine is one of the most exciting emerging artists working in the United States today,” says Gallery Director Adela Holmes. “She’s a real find and brings a fresh energy to Miami’s art scene. Her work will surely impress even the most sophisticated collectors.”

July and August. The gallery will be open all Summer showing a collective exhibit of their artists.

BKF Kate Gilmore, By Any Means, 2009, Video still, 15', 20". Courtesy of the artist and Locust Projects.

Until June 28
Kate Gilmore. By Any Means

By Any Means is a performance-based video and a site-specific sculpture in which the physicality of architecture and sculpture is pitted against the female body and will. It is the first exhibition at Locust Projects' new location in Miami's Design District.

Gilmore is the sole protagonist in her single-channel videos, where she sets up a difficult physical task to overcome. The videos, always filmed in private, are destructive, comedic and only attempted once. For By Any Means, 2009, Gilmore, donned in feminine dress and heels, will dig, build and climb her way out of a dirt-filled wooden sculpture. The large-scale sculpture will be installed in Locust Projects’ adjacent courtyard and will remain on view for the duration of the exhibition.

The artist will also present three recent video-based works in this exhibition.

Summer: TMSister in situ
Miami-based collaborative TM Sisters are the winners of the second Hilger Artist Project Award. In July, the artists begin their two-month transformation of Locust Projects’ space for a site-specific installation and performance opening in the fall. Visitors are welcome to observe the progress of the exhibition over the summer.

Jamali. Shie Moreno. Andrew Muggleton
Lawrence Savage Galleries welcomes the internationally renowned artist Jamali who has long attracted a select and international circle of collectors, drawn by his mystical style and charismatic persona.

Jamali's method of painting is its own unique chapter in the history of contemporary art. He paints out of doors, applying paint in a meditative dance, like the Sufi mystic's swirling prayer to God. He builds up his intense and complex surfaces over time, allowing the natural elements to interact with the paint and canvas. It often feels as if time and nature, not the artist, had created these deeply etched and layered surfaces. Jamali's method brings to new fruition what Donald Kuspit calls "the unconscious mystical meaning of modernist surface."

The Galleries continue to present Shie Moreno’s artwork of individual expression and the display of noted designer Andrew Muggleton’s 2009 furniture collection.

Curtis Lafollette
Metal shows mastery of material.  It is very much about extraordinary interpretation of ordinary, normally mundane items and is indicative of his work with other such objects such as bud vases, hollowware, and flatware.  Though clearly an amazing metal-smith and master of his craft, Curtis is perhaps better described as a sculptor first and foremost.

His work turns on its head the very question of form vs function and shatters the boundaries between what were seemingly disparate ideals.   It's not easy to reinvent the tea-pot but Curtis has.
