Daniela Wicki, Helios V, 2007. Mixed media on glass.

Until May 22
Transformations by Daniela Wicki
Daniela Wicki’s mastery of industrial tools and materials allows her to explore new ways of expression. Even though her techniques evolved from traditional methods of painting and sculpting, her work stands out for her extraordinary ability to communicate moods and sensations in a dynamic, almost layered fashion. Wicki pushes the limits of her creative expression by providing her audience with an experience of discovery as her work is transformed by the manipulation of light, the very essence that allows for color and texture to be.
Referring to her work recently exposed in arteaméricas Art Fair and now at ArtVision Gallery, Adriana Herrera (El Nuevo Herald, April 20, 2008) explains that "Both these works presuppose that the presence of the body of the viewer, as in the illuminated glass works and abstract paintings, Wicki’s art works reflects the importance of human existence: energy in motion." |

From May 7 to June 2
Tania Mercadal
Photography
Tania Mercadal was born and also resides in Miami, Florida. Her Cuban heritage is a fundamental part of her life and is reflected in many of her photographs. Her most recent work is a series and collection of work, where hands play the central role as storytellers. These photographs are close-ups of hands and their captured movements, actions, and details representing a certain memory. They convey the experiences of a second-generation Cuban, whose love for a country never lived in, is not limited or confined by the boundaries of space, time, or even circumstance. This love is firmly recreated in the collective memories and traditions shared by close family and friends, who have kept Cuba animated and alive in Tania’s own life and ultimately in her photography.
Tania captures her images thru digital photography, a technique she has been developing for the past few years.

20th Anniversary NAEMI Annual Exhibition
Outsider Art
The National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI) marks its 20 years of service to outsider art with its 20th Annual Exhibition.
NAEMI an international organization dedicated to discovering, promoting and exhibiting work by artists with mental illness launches a new exhibition with an opening reception and creative workshops at the Miami Center for the Photographic Arts.
All 50 works featured in the exhibition will be available for sale with proceeds benefiting the artists and NAEMI’s goal of helping artists with mental illness from around the world.
Founded in 1988, NAEMI is a pioneer of the outsider art movement in the USA and Spain .The organization is dedicated solely to exhibiting and promoting art conceived and created by artists with mental illness.
Elisa Turner contributed with a few thoughts on Outsider Art: ...“Outsider artists, who often have troubled pasts and live in institutions for the mentally ill, rarely if ever have access to complex equipment for photography and video. Their materials are simple and basic, their medium usually drawing or painting, quite removed from topical ideas in contemporary art, but somehow outsider artists can touch the soul. “...
