Othoniel, Mon lit, 2002. Murano glass, steel, 9.6 x 6.2 x 7.10 feet, 1/1 |

| |
Until April 5
Jean-Michel Othoniel
Diary of Happiness |
For this event, the artist realized a great installation titled “Diary of Happiness”: a giant abacus 2,20 meters high and 4,50 meters long, each bead of which is made of Murano glass and represents a day of the year.
This work of art suggests slowing down the time dropping off the days passing by, just as chaplet. It is also questioning the lost paradise and an invitation to seek happiness. The abacus frame is black on one side, white on the other one. At the beginning of the year, all the beads are placed on the dark side and it is our job to move them to the light, day after day, and to make each year unique.
"Jean-Michel Othoniel seized on glass as if it were an abandoned, undeveloped plot containing a conceptual treasure. We sometimes hesitate between the sacred and the profane in defining this esthetic, which echoes across past centuries marked by liturgical rituals and religious processions, but also by the law of desire and its cohort, of sentimental fantasies." Graciela Sacco
Historias del m²: Espacio Minimo Vital |
Graciela Sacco is a visual artist, photographer, video and installation artist. In Historias del m² Sacco reexamines the square metre, the minimum vital space needed for an individual.
She states, “It is a reflection on social space and on individual space; a reflection on the everyday battle for that desired place. It alludes to our permanent movement towards a place of belonging; the inside and the outside.” The gallery will be modified with an installation of panels placed at 90° angles which portray signs and metaphors of mankind in transit.

These displacements are captured as footsteps left on stairs as seen from below. This is her second solo show with the gallery.
Clifton Childree. It Gets Worse
A nightmarish slapstick short film. This 1920s style silent horror film is about an old sea captain troubled by a cursed coffin shaped nickel arcade game which changes his appearance and personality, transforming him into the Mr. Hyde alter ego of his character.

Melissa Rodwell
The Boys Collection |
The Boys Collection is a body of work that challenges society’s viewpoint on what is perceived as “sexy.” Melissa Rodwell’s photographs celebrate the youthful male body in striking poses that emanate energy, sexuality and vulnerability with a distinct ‘70s glam-rock, androgynous edge.
Photographed over a three-year period, Rodwell envisioned a body of images that would bring back the erotic sexuality of the young male at a time when the current Zeitgeist is oversaturated with female body-consciousness. Weary of shooting female models, she turned her lens to male subjects with breathtaking and thought-provoking results.
“The Boys Collection” is Rodwell’s fourth solo show. The Miami installation follows her critically and publicly acclaimed exhibition in Los Angeles.
Photographer Melissa Rodwell and her husband/muse David Skyler will meet guests at the opening reception. |

Gustavo Acosta. Carlos Estevez, Ted Larsen. |
Gustavo Acosta’s big canvases are showing a departure from his previous work. Although still interested in urban settings he is offering a new view of the city and its surroundings. In these works he ventures into a different treatment of light, resulting in images that look almost abstract.
Carlos Estevez is presenting a series of boxes, a project on which he has been working on for he past couple of years. These assemblages, although in a minor scale, compare to his installations, where the scenographic sense dominates. A juxtaposition of found and made objects compiled into the boxes creates and alternate universe.
Ted Larsen new works. Although he is using recycled materials we can perceive a different approach to materials, a monochromatic color scheme and more complex forms.

Jen Stark.
Place in Space |
Sculptural installation, drawing and animation by Miami luminary Jen Stark. This will be Stark’s first solo show with the gallery for which the works will be specifically realized.
A testament to process and patience, her sculptures are remarkably simple and ultimately irresistible. Using only paper, an X-acto knife, and glue, Stark succeeds in creating intricate and intelligent sculptures that reveal to us how remarkable a material like paper can become. They exemplify the contrast between exterior and interior and in-between the voids of white and intoxicating myriads of vivid color, often arranged in geometrically mesmerizing configurations, we find a little magic about the world.
This series of work is inspired by the unseen potential of common things. Here Stark deals with the transformation of simple objects, imbuing them with a dimension and meaning hither-to unattained. |

The works of the artists chosen for The Room Underneath explore a broad range of artistic approaches and subject matter, but all embody an identifiable theme central to the human experience, where each artist transforms these associations through repetitive accumulation, strange juxtapositions and/or inventive assemblage. Through these physical methods, the artists challenge the connotations of the mundane material or subject, transforming their work into something more potent and engaging.
The opening reception includes a party at the Backlot @ the Bakehouse

Conceptual works, narrative pieces, digital video, as well as photographic collage and portraiture, extraordinary paintings and sculptural installations.
The art work shown here belongs to Wulf Treu who lives and works in Miami and NYC. He is a daring contemporary artist pushing the boundaries of consciousness with a naive pop influence. Often utilizing recycled materials and transforming them into his own masterpieces with a message, he seeks to stir the viewer's imagination. One will find a simplicity as well as a sense of humor; perhaps tongue and cheek, in some of his most recent works; social commentary or just pure fun, the viewer will be delighted |

Kim Joon. Adult Bodies as paintings |
He uses water based markers to create the designs on human bodies which appear almost like tattoos. Joon remains fascinated with the tensions between the mind and body. He is intrigued by the concept of the permanence of tattoos as a vehicle for marking one’s soul.
Joon said, "I am interested in tattoo as a metaphor for hidden desire or a kind of compulsion engraved into human consciousness. I see the skin, or in some cases the monitor, as an extension of a canvas…Tattoos can reflect individual and collective reality or displaced desire." He’s known for using brands like Puma, Heineken and Louis Vuitton as conceptual inspiration for each body he paints. |

Silvana Lacarra. Dys-Functional |
The work that Lacarra has been producing over the last decade is both-and neither-in the medium of painting and sculpture. Rectangular, flat-surfaced and hung, most of her work could be considered painting. They look like paintings. But Lacarra's pieces have also always been sculptures, in the most literal of senses… Lacarra's tables, standing on their feet, standing on their head, with half broken legs offer and reveal not the hidden secret behind their making, but the residue of experience. Dys/Functional.
From her first solo show, in 1999, Silvana Lacarra has rarely titled or named her individual pieces or her exhibitions… And, even though names have made their way into Lacarra's work as it has moved into something like the theatrical realm of the mise-en-scène-area in which, interestingly, Lacarra has also worked- leading the spectator into narrative scenes, guided into those spaces of affect by the compelling drive of its naming process, the resistance to easy appropriation remains: "Dys/Functional". Natalia Brizuela (fragments).

Ruggieri, 2008 |
|

| |
Until March 31
Gina Ruggeri NEW WORK
New work: Installation, Paintings |
The mind’s eye is a human being’s ability for visual perception, imagination, visualization and memory. In painting, the degree to which a representation causes this important function to be stressed or challenged is in direct correlation with its level of abstraction. Along the blurred line between the two art forms, where representation ends and abstraction begins (or vice versa), is where Ruggeri’s work lies.
Painted on translucent Mylar and wood (both cut out to form a silhouette of the object) as well as canvas, Ruggeri’s pieces constitute a meditation on the natural world. Her subjects are quite organic and quotidian, as compositions display piles of rock, canopies of leaves, dirt holes or tree stumps. What becomes immediately apparent is how these familiar forms are used to tinker with the viewer’s sense of the real. |

Three Different Views of Color and expression: Sallent, Carrillo and Torriente. |
Fabre Sallent- well known Spanish Artist, Fabre’s art is simple at first view, the more you look at his paintings you can see the richness of its colors, and the depth of expressions, he brings out in his paintings, a complexity of style and multi-faceted, artist, that he is.
Alberto Carrillo – Passion, brilliance of colors, and strength come through his paintings, born in Cuba. He’s style is also full of depth and expression, although the style is very different to the other two artists exhibiting with him this month.
Eric Torriente – A young and very talented up coming artist, Eric is an Artist and a Design Artist, in his very expressive paintings, he captures, different life styles in Miami, from the “Dominoes players” in 8th Street, to the “wheeling and dealing” on “36th Street”, to the hustle and bustle on Brickell Ave.

Latin American Art is Hot.
Giselle Delgado
Performance |
Artist Giselle Delgado unveils the first part of what will be exhibited during arteaméricas 2008, in a perfomance that combines projected images, music, and where she will be, once again, giving out pins of the very much talked about LATIN AMERICAN ART IS HOT campaign that was created for arteaméricas.
In this work, called ART.VERTISING 1, Giselle is erasing the thin line between art and advertising, by converting arteaméricas’ advertising campaign into a work of art, full of expression of her duality of living and being a creator in both worlds and the change of perception that people have when it’s art and when it’s advertising. (a mural of mixed media will be ehibited in arteaméricas). It also depicts how we are all guilty of manipulating and being willfully manipulated by others. All the photographs taken of people wearing the LATIN IS HOT button, since Art Basel, throughout all the art events in Miami, up until now, will be part of her work.

Animals. Juan Erlich
|
Lyle O Reitzel Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition by the emerging Argentinean artist, Juan Erlich, with his first show in the United States after much success in Barcelona and Buenos Aires.
The exhibition consists of nine photographs mounted onto Plexiglas, from the collection titled 'Animals': 'Delta', 'Toxodontes', 'Mara', to name a few.
According to the art critic and ex-director of the Museum of Modern Art of Santo Domingo, Sarah Hermann, Erlich "creates his own manual of zoology from where it raises his possible and alternate worlds. He creates in turn hierarchic systems that arrange them. The criterion of power or prevalence of these beings is established by the presence, by the look and appearance of every species in the photographs, as well as by the degree of interaction of the artist with the created image.
